Police Officer Position Information

Starting Salary
Minimum Hiring Bonus: $5,000

Up to $13,000 for certified Police Officers, based on years of law enforcement experience and percentage of starting salary

Starting hourly: $34-$44 an hour

  • Night ($2.50/hr)
  • Weekend ($2.00/hr)

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have graduated from high school or received a GED
    • Police Officer candidates must have at least 40 college credits
  • Good driving record and valid driver license
  • No felony or domestic violence convictions
  • No misdemeanor convictions within the past 5 years
  • No active warrants or domestic violence injunctions
  • Additional drug use restrictions
Hiring Process

UW Madison Police Department has developed a comprehensive hiring process to evaluate the knowledge, skills and abilities of prospective employees.  Each position is unique and has different steps to assess candidates. All positions apply through the UW Jobs website.  Job postings are generally open for approximately 4 weeks.  Candidates must submit a cover letter and resume with their application.

  • Police Officer (new to law enforcement): Candidates will be assessed through a phone interview, assessment center (writing assessment, team problem solving exercise, and role play scenario), and final interview. This hiring and background investigation process takes approximately 4 months. Candidates will begin their employment one week prior to the start of the Madison College Police Academy. Which starts in either January or August.
  • Police Officer (already certified): Candidates will take part in a one day hiring event, which will include a writing assessment, role play scenario, and an interview. Candidates will experience an accelerated hiring process, which will take approximately 3 months, including the background investigation.

All candidates who successfully complete all steps for their respective position will receive a conditional offer of employment and move to the background investigation stage. If the background investigation is deemed acceptable, the candidate will be given a final offer.
